The Kūaka has significant meaning to Māori who knew it as a traveller and credit it with guidance of waka from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. The He Kuaka website, which uses some of my images, covers this is some detail and leverages the qualities attributed to Kūaka to impact on family violence.

Pathway of the Birds by Andrew Crowe is a fascinating exploration of the role of bird migration and the association with Māori and Polynesian navigation. I am pleased to have contributed an image to this book and the copy received in recognition was far more meaningful then a monetary payment would have been.
