In Celebration of Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori/Māori Language Week 2021, I thought that I would share some our pelagic manu/birds along with what may have been their first given human names.

A number of birds have a variety of Māori names and the Tītī is no different also been known as Hākoakoa and Hakoko. Their additional English name of Muttonbird is less inspiring unless you’re a starving sailor!

This individual was one of thousands seen and photographed at their breeding stronghold at Tini Heke/Snares
