Toanui/Flesh-footed Shearwater are medium to large dark coloured pelagic birds that are attracted to boats so commonly encountered by fishermen in northern New Zealand waters during the summer. They can dive quite deeply to take bait and scraps so can come into conflict with fisherman, a habit than can have detrimental consequences. They breed on a number of offshore islands before migrating around the Pacific.
