I have a special fondness for ōi – Grey-faced Petrel, having got up close and personal with them while helping Edin with her Masters field work. Working with my daughter with birds the same age as her gave me a deep appreciation for these remarkable creatures that we share the planet with and unknowingly influence with our self centred behaviour.
They are also known as Tītī and Northern Muttonbird as their chicks are traditionally harvested like the chicks of Tīti/Sooty Shearwater, a challenging concept for those who know the effort invested in raising a single offspring.
