The New Zealand Dabchick has a number of indigenous names including weweia, totokipio, taihoropi and taratimoho. The Rotorua lakes area has always been a stronghold for them and over the years they seem to be getting more abundant than I remember in the past. The Rotorua lakefront now has a sizeable population and I recently saw a flotilla of 20 birds in one spot.
This collection of images shows a pair with their 2 young chicks and is just an excuse to celebrate these photogenic little birds again. I have previous written about New Dabchick in this post.
