The 50th Anniversary edition of Dunedin Festival Photography results were recently announced and I was honoured to have the above image announced as the champion image in the Nature Projected Images category. I regularly get notifications from the Photographic Society of New Zealand about upcoming competitions but have never entered. For some reason this competition caught my eye and having spent some time photographing in the Dunedin area over the past year I was tempted to enter so pulled 4 recent images from my archive and sent them off.
Results were announced at a livestream on Sunday 8 May so it was quite exciting. Of my images, one was accepted, 2 received Honours and this image was selected as Champion. It was great to watch the presentation and see all the lovely images, many by photographers I know and whose work I admire.
The other category announced with the images shown was the Open Projected Images category and the Champion in this category was another Bay of Plenty photographer that I know, Maree Wills from Whakatane with her stunning image of Wairaka (Lady of the Rock) in sea spray at the mouth of the Whakatane river.
Other categories shown were Monochrome and Portraiture. So many inspiring images.
The print category results were also announced but the images were not shown. I again recognised a number of photographers I know and admire so it was a really enjoyable event to attend, albeit virtually.
There is an exhibition from 3-11 June at the Dunedin Community Gallery so if you’re around it would be well worth a visit. I would love to see the print entries but am unable to attend due to a clash with the Birds NZ Conference.
