On the way to one of our fishing spots in the bush we pass Murupara, a small timber town with a reputation for being a bit down at heel. Last time past I had noticed a new cafe next to the main road and this time the timing was right for an early lunch so we stopped in at the DiPHerenT cafe, a tiny slip of a place on the edge of what looks like an old abandoned workshop. Christine, the owner, was very helpful and welcoming, taking our order for coffee and a couple of her home-made pies with salad. She offered plenty of advice about surrounding activities and sites and would be a great resource for travelers to the area. The pies were great with excellent filling (bacon and egg for me and Edin had a steak pie which had a lovely mustard gravy which made me regret my choice). The salads were amazing – loads of fresh tomato and avocado with celery and freshly picked garlic chives and thyme from a herbs in pot, topped with balsamic dressing. We’re definitely looking forward to our next stop on the way past.

6 Nov 2013it was formerly the local “NZ Road Services”depot, the bus depot.i went for a drive around part of my old hometown and i think if it hadn’t have been for the fact that i had a nice coffee and such a pleasant host in christine, prior to my drive, what i saw might have broken my heart. the cafe -a wonderful place with a lovely host, murupara no longer the wonderful place of my chilhood and early adulthood.if christine’s business is open when i return on other fishing trips i will certainly call in.

14 Oct 2014So sorry to hear this, Sue. Thanks for letting me know. We will think of Christine every time we head past Murupara into the bush and remember what a unique and special person she was and the pleasure that knowing her brought to our lives.
