This week’s blog post covering the NZ Aria 2018 was so early in the week I thought I would do a second short post with some photos of the Tauranga White-fronted Terns that nest each spring on an old bridge. White-fronted terns are our most common tern and are a joy to watch with their delicate flight and high pitched calls. The pilings of an old bridge in Tauranga are a regular nesting site for a small group and is easily accessible for photography from the footpath on the new bridge.
The terns are quite active, flying and landing frequently. On the day we visited they were busy displaying and reinforcing pair bonds with courtship feeding. We didn’t see any eggs but one bird was sitting fast so may have been incubating.
All photos with Nikon D500 and Nikon 300mm f4PF lens.
